McCall, ID (CBS2) — There have been eight structures lost in the Elkhorn Fire as of Wednesday afternoon.
According to the U.S. Forest Service increased fire behavior picked up this morning on the south side of the Salmon River, the fire then crossed the river near Allison Ranch.
Firefighters used the sprinklers, pumps, and hose lays they already had in place to try and protect the structures at the ranches.
Firefighters reported winds as high as 90 miles per hour that were blowing in all directions at Allison Ranch with pieces of large debris flying through the air. Firefighters had to abandon their efforts to protect the structures due to the extreme fire behavior and the burn intensity.
Firefighters also performed structure protection at Yellow Pine Ranch which helped to minimize the loss and damage to the structures.
There were seven structures that were lost at Allison Ranch and one at Yellow Pine Ranch as well as a partially damaged structure at Yellow Pine Ranch.
Firefighters say that the structure protection that had worked in previous years failed due to the type of fuels, terrain, and weather that created significant fire behavior.
