A happy 12-year-old was on his way home after a football game when life changed forever. A car knocked the youngster off his bike, and the accident had devastating consequences.

Katie Smith was the proud mother of her only son, Joey Smith. He meant the world to her, and she enjoyed watching him grow and thrive. The youngster loved football, and his happy outlook on life made him a joy to be around.

His grandmother, Karen Laichalk, stated that he had a lot going for him, and she knew he had a fantastic future ahead. The family never imagined such a bright light could be blown out suddenly and unfairly.

He Was Passionate about Football

The Michigan youngster was a member of his middle school football team, and he likely spent many afternoons practicing ball skills and learning new techniques on the field.

On October 14, 2022, Joey attended a football match, and afterward, he headed home on his bicycle. It was an ordinary Friday, and he had no reason to suspect something tragic was waiting around the corner.

Superintendent Weeks encouraged moms and dads to speak to their children about the incident. He stated that while it was impossible to predict how someone would respond to such a tragedy, it was crucial to be on high alert.

The Shocking Accident

One of Joey's friends asked him to help search for his missing phone. The youngster didn't hesitate and returned to the field near Dearborn heights to assist. The simple action had unexpectedly painful consequences for Joey and his family.

A black Jeep struck the youngster—the once cheerful and passionate boy was injured critically. Instantly, his family's world turned upside down.

First responders tried to save Joey's life, rendering first aid before rushing him to the hospital. Unfortunately, his wounds were too severe, and he passed away at the medical facility.

The Aftermath of the Tragedy

Police revealed that the vehicle's driver cooperated and stayed at the accident scene. A witness stated that the driver came to a complete stop and was not speeding.

The D7 School District superintendent, Dr. Ty Weeks, shared his condolences with Joey's family. He assured parents that counseling was available for their kids. He wrote:

"We are shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Counselors have been assigned to the middle school to assist the teachers and students. These counselors will remain in place for as long as needed."

Other Parents Are Worried

Superintendent Weeks encouraged moms and dads to speak to their children about the incident. He stated that while it was impossible to predict how someone would respond to such a tragedy, it was crucial to be on high alert.

Shaun McGraw hoped the boy's passing would not be in vain. McGraw, a resident living near the accident scene, indicated that drivers needed to be policed more strictly at the intersection.

He was a father and couldn't imagine losing one of his precious little ones. He expressed: "I worry about it."

Support for the Shattered Family

Joey's family was having a tough time processing his unexpected death. His grandmother revealed that she had returned to the accident scene. Karen explained: "I needed to come and find closure where he lost his life."

A GoFundMe page was created to support the relatives. By October 17, more than $32,000 had been donated. A post on the fundraising page stated:

"Please help this family during this unforeseen and tragic time. No parent should have to bury a child."

Joey's family was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. Amid the pain, they felt uplifted by every comment and dollar donated. They also shared that a candlelight vigil will be held on October 20 at the Annapolis student parking.
