Realizing that her true passion in medicine was dermatology, Dr. LaRusso then completed a clinical pharmacology fellowship with Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia while concurrently performing translational research in dermatology under the world renowned physician and researcher, Jouni Uitto, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. LaRusso’s research focus was on an inherited skin disease PXE (Psuedoxanthoma elasticum.) After finishing the clinical pharmacology fellowship, Dr. LaRusso entered a dermatology residency at Thomas Jefferson where she continued her work. She has published numerous articles and has received multiple accolades for her research in PXE, including the Johson-Beerman Award, the Everett C. Fox Residents & Fellows Award and the Stelwagon Prize.
During her time spent in the laboratory, Dr. LaRusso decided to pursue a fellowship in Mohs surgery. She trained under Dr. Roger Ceilley in West Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Ceilley, former president of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery, was a student of Frederic E. Mohs. She is board certified in dermatology and fellowship trained in Mohs surgery. Working with Dr. Ceilley, Dr. LaRusso received stellar training in both dermatopathology and reconstructive surgery.
After completing her fellowship through the American College of Mohs Surgery in Iowa, Dr. LaRusso and her family returned to the east coast. She has worked as a traveling Mohs surgeon for numerous dermatology offices in NJ, PA, and DE. By traveling to different offices, Dr. LaRusso has acquired valuable insight and experience on how successful dermatology practices operate. Dr. LaRusso is the owner of SunWise Family Dermatology & Surgery which is located in Delaware.
