Chaka founded her own band, The Crystalettes, while she was in her early teens, and then went on to perform with different bands around Chicago throughout her adolescence. After dropping out of high school, she married at 17 and took on her husband’s surname; she then started her major professional career in 1972 as a member of the band Rufus, which rose to fame with the song “Tell Me Something Good” (1974), for which the band received a Grammy Award. Furthermore, their fifth studio album, “Ask Rufus” (1977), was certified platinum and received a Grammy nomination. Rufus sang another Grammy-winning song with him, “Ain’t Nobody” (1983). While still playing with Rufus, Chaka Khan launched a solo career in 1978. She has 45 singles, 12 studio albums, five compilation albums, and a live album to her credit. She received Grammy Awards in 1984 for her studio album “Chaka Khan” (1982) and the song “Be Bob Medley,” which she performed with Arif Mardin (1984). In 1985, the singer received a Grammy for the song “I Feel For You” (1979), and in 1991, she won another Grammy for the song “I’ll Be Good To You” (1976), which she co-wrote with Ray Charles. Khan won two Grammy Awards for his studio albums “The Woman I Am” (1992) and “Funk This” (2004). Other Grammy-winning songs include The Funk Brothers’ “What’s Going On” (1971) and Mary J. Blige’s “Disrespectful” (2007). Chaka Khan’s net worth grew as a result of all of the above-mentioned records.
